Language and Literature

Language and Literature subjects are offered by the Language and Literature Division in the School of Humanities and Information Studies Education.

Most subjects are available to students in the BEd (Primary), BSocSc (InfoMgt) and the BEd (Secondary) (all streams except Environmental Science) courses.

Language and Literature A and a range of Language and Literature B, C and. D subjects are offered.

Students specialising in Language and Literature will normally take Language and Literature A, followed by Language and Literature B1 and at least one other Language and Literature B subject, followed by three Language and Literature C subjects. Language and Literature D subjects are also available in the fourth year.

Language and Literature A has no prerequisites.

The prerequisite for Language and Literature B subjects is Language and Literature A, or approved equivalent. The prerequisite for Language and Literature C subjects is credit of 33.3 points in Language and Literature B subjects including Language and Literature Bl, or approved equivalent.

The prerequisite for Method of Teaching: English in the BEd (Secondary) course is Language and Literature B1 with one other Language and Literature B subject, or approved equivalent.

175 Additional Studies in Language and

Literature

Year 2: Up to three additional subjects from B8 to B18 may be taken. These may be studied over more than one year if desired.

Year 3: Up to three additional subjects from C8 to C29 may be taken. These may be studied over more than one year if desired.

Year 4: Normally students will take Language and Literature DI and two of D21 to D29, but any of the D subjects may be taken individually. (Note: Year 4 BEd (Secondary) students may enrol in subjects B8 to B18 or C8 to C29 where they have the required prerequisites and the subjects are not taught during block teaching rounds.)

Attendance

Attendance at all Language and Literature classes is obligatory unless other arrangements are made.

Language Skills

An acceptable level of language skills must be reached for a student to pass in any Language and Literature subject.

Availability of Subjects

Not all Language and Literature elective subjects will be offered in any one year. Notification will be given before the end of the preceding year of any that will definitely not be running. Students are also advised to check with the Division that an elective subject in which they are enrolled has attracted a large enough number to run before buying the texts for that subject.

Language and Literature B Subjects

A normal Year 2 course of study consists of the core subject Language and Literature B1 (22.2 points), plus one of the elective subjects Language and Literature B8 to B18 (11.1 points). Students may take up to three of these elective subjects as independent subjects, and enrol in up to two of these subjects without prior or concurrent enrolment in Language and Literature B1. No student will be permitted to enrol in more than two of the elective subjects unless he or she is enrolled in, or has passed, Language and Literature B1. Not all of the elective subjects will be offered in any one year. BEd (Secondary) students are restricted to a maximum of 133.3 points of Language and Literature B, C and D subjects in their course.

Language and Literature C Subjects

A normal Year 3 course of study will consist of three of the subjects Language and Literature C8 to C29 (11.1 points each), at least two of which must be from the group Language and Literature C21 to C29. In addition, students may take up three other C-level subjects. Not all of the optional C-level subjects will be offered in any one year. No student is permitted to enrol in more than one of the subjects Language and Literature C8 to C18 unless he or she is enrolled in, or has passed, two of the subjects Language and Literature C21 to C29.

Language and Literature D Subjects

A normal Year 4 course of study will consist of Language and Literature D1 (11.1 points), plus two of the subjects Language and Literature D21 to D29 (11.1 points). However, any one of these subjects may be taken separately. Not all of the Language and Literature subjects D21 to D29 will be offered in any one year.

Content:Three inter-related areas: literature studies, language studies and personal writing, designed to acquaint students with aspects of their spoken and written culture, and to encourage exploration of the writing process.

Assessment: A written exercise on poetry, of approximately 750 words (16.7 per cent); an essay on fiction, of approximately 1200 words (16.7 percent);

an essay on drama, of approximately 1200 words (16.7 per cent); a 3-hour examination (50 per cent).

Students must also satisfactorily complete a folio of personal writing of approximately four items, and one or two exercises in Language Studies. Attendance at classes is required, unless other arrangements are made. Results will be graded.

Contact:. Two hours of lectures/seminars and three hours of workshops each week. (Two semesters.) Content: A practical introduction to the Italian Language and culture. Through systematic and progressive study methods, students are expected to develop receptive and productive skills that will allow them basic communication in Italian. Emphasis will be placed on elementary vocabulary, expressions in common use, and common idiomatic expressions.

Assessment: Assignments and oral and written tests totalling up to 7500 words. Attendance at classes is required unless other arrangements are made. Results will be graded.

Content:Three inter-related areas: literature studies (Australian and Renaissance Literature), language studies (Australian English, syntax, phonology), and personal writing.

Assessment: Two essays of approximately 1500 words (30 per cent each); two essays or exercises of approximately 1000 words (20 per cent each), all on the Literature section of the course. Students must also satisfactorily complete two short language exercises and a writing folio of approximately 1500 words. Attendance at classes is required unless other arrangements are made. Content: A study of a range of texts by 19th and 20th century women writers and an introduction to some of the major concerns of recent feminist literary theory.

Assessment: An essay of approximately 1000 words (30 per cent); the choice of a second 1000-word essay or a class paper (30 per cent); an essay of approximately 1500 words (40 per cent). Attendance at classes is required unless other arrangements are made. Results will be graded.

computers, and of computer literacy in the classroom.

481-285 LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE B11: THE ENGLISH NOVEL

(Two semesters.)

Content: A study of selected major novels of the 19th and 20th centuries in which important lines of development of the English novelistic tradition may be discerned. Topics include: the rise of the novel, the reading public and novelistic convention, the novel and narrative techniques, myth and the novel, the novel as art form, and style and the novel.

Assessment:Two essays of approximately 1750 words each (100 per cent): the first a critical study of one of the prescribed novels (which a student may choose to replace with the presentation of a class paper on that work), and the second a discussion of a more general aspect of the novel, entailing a consideration of three or more of the prescribed texts. With the approval of the relevant staff member, students may elect to present a single,major essay of approximately 4000 words, treating a significant general aspect of the novel, and entailing a discussion of at least three of the prescribed texts. Attendance at classes is required unless other arrangements are made. Results will be graded.

Content: An exploration of aspects of American Literature, with some reference to notions of `the American Dream' (and its effects on Australian culture), although the course will not be limited to this emphasis. Students will be allowed personal choice of one or two extra texts, if they wish, by negotiation with the lecturer in charge.

Assessment: Contributions to class discussion, including leading a group discussion, and class preparation, which may include written work of approximately 500 words (30 per cent); an exercise of approximately 1000 words (20 per cent) on poetry;

an assignment of approximately 1500 words on one of the listed novels (30 per cent); an assignment of approximately 1000 words on a text of the student's choice (20 per cent). Alternative assessment arrangements may be negotiated with students.

discussion group each week, except during block periods of School Experience. ( Two semesters.) Content: A study of the factors involved in the writing process: motivation, organisation, editing, audience, style, consideration of types of writing, appropriateness and the development of repertoire.

Students will be expected to develop a folio of writing.

A study of children's writing will be included.

Assessment: A folio of writing consisting of approximately four pieces or 5000 words, as individually negotiated (90 per cent) or the folio and a journal (80 per cent and 10 per cent); class preparation and participation (10 percent). Students must also complete practical writing exercises set in class, which will include writing pieces of approximately 500 words between classes, and other written work including an informal journal, the nature of which will be individually negotiated. Attendance at classes is required unless other arrangements are made. Results will be graded.

Content: A study of the way language in each of its modes is acquired and developed. Topics include:

the acquisition of mother tongue language, from infant pre-speech to the later stages of development in adolescence; theories about writing and reading development; theories about the relationship between language and thought, language and culture, and language and gender.

Assessment: A major project of approximately 2500

words (80 per cent); a class presentation equivalent to approximately 1000 words (20 per cent).
