The purchase by the committee of the Hospital for Sick Children of the house and grounds lately occupied by Sir Redmond Barry, has excited considerable apprehension in the minds of persons living in that neighbourhood, so that public meetings have been held by property- holders in Rathdown and Drummond-streets, to take measures to give force and direction to the protest they desired to make against the danger their excited imagination has conjured up. To show how selfishness and fear together, may mislead otherwise well-intentioned Persons, the following resolution was deliberately agreed to at this Ineetinc, : " That this meeting requests that the two members for North Melbourne and the members for Collingwood, be communicated With, and urged to oppose the granting of any public money towards establishing an hospital in Carlton." Johnson, Government Analyst, has thus reported of the water 811PPlied to Geelong :—" This water much resembles the Yan Yean
when it was first introduced. The clay and vegetable matters are both objectionable for the supply of a town for several reasons (if long continued), but as it is probable this objection in the present instance is only temporary, as was the case with the Yan Yean supply, no apprehensions need be entertained of the public health being affected."
