Sharwood relinquished his position as Alumni President when he accepted an appointment at the Law School. At the faculty, there was strong support for the development of a new graduate school of management within the faculty.

Main research interests in Meteorology include computer modeling of the atmosphere, oceans and ice sheets. The University Council has agreed to phase out the Department of Human Movement Studies.

The veterinary clinic and hospital are crucial for the success of the faculty's education. It was necessary during 1 9 8 1 , during a period of financial difficulties, to make adjustments to the procedures and authorities at the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital.

BOARD OF

THE LIBRARY

The library's development of effective systems is all aimed at effective management of the collection. The Villiers collection will form the basis for the development of the library's collections in this area.

FINANCE

It is the collection itself that remains the heart of the Library and its services. A remarkable addition to the collection was made possible by the financial support of the Potter Foundation.

RESEARCH

In 1982 the Commonwealth Government announced an increase in the number and value of Commonwealth Postgraduate Research Awards. The number of PhD students enrolled at the university continues to be high and increasing, while several fields must be increasingly selective in admitting research students to enrolment.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

These were the Faculty of Arts (Department of Fine Arts and Classical Studies with the greatest demand) and the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. The University encourages faculty to develop courses of interest to the community that use existing expertise, focus on the level at which the University normally operates, and relate to University scholarship.

BUILDINGS

It is clear that the reduction successes of the first three years of the program have come to an end. The energy program will continue and it is hoped that costs can be controlled, especially by using the Central Monitoring System.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

The year saw the first reversal of the extremely favorable pattern of reduced consumption beginning in 1978. The gallery celebrated the production of a new and complete catalog of the Ewing Painting Collection.

UNIVERSITY SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

Renovation of the Union Theater has become necessary to meet safety standards and the work will take place in 1983. The Chairman of the Union Board from January to May was Mrs. Maureen O'Brien and for the rest of the year Mr. Donald Smith.

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY PRESS

The University Women's Firsts Basketball Team won its Victorian Open competition for the year and have been promoted. An inquiry into the roles of the Recreation Committee and the Sports Union, together with the relationship of both bodies to the University, was commenced during the year and will continue during 1983.

THE GRADUATE UNION*

Examining the opportunities raised by the draft of Mr. Coyne was incomplete at the end of the year. The Graduate House Board is aware of its duty and capacity to contribute to the intellectual life of the University.

MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY

The season continued with shows directed by John Sumner-Godsend, a new and challenging play by Ray Lawler and David Williamson's sell-out hit The Perfectionist. Steele Rudd's joyous walk On Our Selection was directed by Graeme Blundell and the Season ended with Nimrod's guest production of the political farce Accidental Death of an Anarchist.

UNIVERSITY ASSEMBLY

Mrs. Aileen Sarsfield, an Assembly Administrative Officer for eight years, transferred to the Office of the Faculty of Arts. The appointment of Mrs Fiona McClure, the junior typist, ended, and in view of the Assembly's reduced funding, the position was not renewed.

UNIVERSITY GALLERY

982, the University Gallery provided, within its programme of 14 exhibitions, a range which again proved attractive to its patrons

Merrett; John Olsen Echidna Upside D o w n & Drysdale 1981 Etching Gift of artist; Derwent Lees Untitled—Girl in a Smock circa 1930 Pencil and Pencil Gift of Joseph Brown. Assistance was provided by the Victorian Ministry for the Arts with a loan to assist the production of the Inge King catalogue.
