It is envisaged that the current Faculty of Music will become the University of Melbourne's School of Music within a larger Faculty of Music, Visual and Performing Arts. STANDING RESOLUTIONS OF COUNCIL FOR MUSIC DEGREES - UNDERGRADUATE

COURSE STRUCTURE BACHELOR OF MUSIC DEGREE

This is achieved through exposure to the breadth of music composed in the twentieth century and its fundamental principles and techniques. It provides observational and practical experience in approaches widely used in music education, allows students to undertake supervised practice of teaching music in schools and encourages research into redundant aspects of music education. The Honors Bachelor of Music degree will be awarded by the Faculty on the recommendation of the Consultative Board of Examiners and will be based on the results of years 3 and 4 only.

Towards the end of the year in which a grace period has been granted, students will be asked to confirm that they intend to accept a place in the following year. There is no option for part-time studies in the first year of the course. A student who interrupts a course without having applied for leave of absence may, on recommendation from the faculty, be suspended from the course by the Academic Board.

Students may only participate in any musical activity outside the Faculty of Music with written permission from the dean. Alternatively, some students may prefer to discuss their study difficulties with members of the Student Representative Council. Applications must be made before or as soon as possible after the exam date.

In such cases the application must be made before the commencement date of the annual examination. The Study Progress Committee acts on behalf of the Faculty of Music with the implementation of Regulation 2.5 - Unsatisfactory progress. Rules for unsatisfactory progress, as revised or reaffirmed as a result of a review, will be posted on faculty notice boards prior to the start of the first semester in 1991.

OTHER INFORMATION

Aspects of Grainger's life, his personality and views, are conveyed through many of the exhibitions. The museum's archives include music (manuscript and published), recordings of all kinds, correspondence, documents, photographs, books, journals and personal items, as well as the archival records of the Royal Victorian Uedertafel and music manuscripts of Professor G W L Marshall-Hall. A booklet, A Guide to the Grainger Museum is available, and the building is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm (public holidays excepted).

Studio equipment includes state-of-the-art 8-track mixing and recording equipment, several composition and performance synthesizers, as well as signal processing equipment, various tape recorders and a digital audio processor. Use of two 1989 Concert Steinways for exams is restricted to students at Masters and fourth year levels. These students are allowed to practice piano for a maximum of 1 hour until the day of their exam.
